Mrs. Avis Mae Schaal

November 22, 1924 — March 30, 2015

Schaal, Avis M. (nee: Martin), age 90, of Waterford, passed away on March 30, 2015 at Waterford Senior Living. She was born on November 22, 1924 to Walter and Olive (nee: Stubbs) Martin. Her family moved from Waukesha to Burlington where she attended school, graduating from Burlington High School in 1942. She then attended Racine-Kenosha Teachers College graduating in 1944, and graduated from UW-Whitewater in 1960. She taught in Caldwell and the Waterford School District for a total of 36 years.
Avis married Kenneth E. Schaal on May 31, 1946. They operated a dairy farm near Waterford for many years. Ken preceded her in death on June 3, 1987.
She was a member of Norway Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Martha Clausen Bible Guild, the Wisconsin Retired Educators Association, the National Retired Educators Association, the Walworth County Retired Educators Association, and the Red Hats Society. She enjoyed her family and friends, playing cards, gardening and traveling. She was a loyal supporter of Lutherdale Bible Camp, the “Gram” in Gram Schaal’s Quilters.
Avis is survived by her children, Sue (Tom) Johnson of Waterford; Carol (Robert) Michels of Manitowoc; K. Ronald (Kim) of Goode, Virginia; and Patricia Schaefer of Waterford. She is also survived by grandchildren, Julie (Gregg) Bartel; Kristin (Doug) Menzia; Steven Rowntree; Jennifer (Christopher) Novak; Adam (Sheryl) Schaefer; Ryan (Amy) Schaal; Keith (Cristal) Schaefer; and Stacy (Christopher) Middleton. She loved her “greats”, Jayna, Carly, Brynn, and Shaye Bartel; Logan, Ethan, and Tanner Schaefer; Xander and Tim Novak; Eva and Anna Menzia; Meyer and Mallory Schaal; Rylee Schaefer; and Breyden and Mya Middleton. She is also survived by two nephews and one niece.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ken; brother Howard Martin, and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2015 from 9-10:45 AM at Norway Evangelical Lutheran Church, 6321 Heg Park Road, Wind Lake, WI 53185, with Services starting at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place in Burlington Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 4th. Please meet at the cemetery.
The family would like to give a special Thank You to Allay Home and Hospice and Waterford Senior Living for their special care of our Mom and Grandmother Avis.
In lieu of floral expressions of sympathy, the family suggests memorials be made to either Lutherdale Bible Camp, Norway Lutheran Church, or Norway Food Bank “Helping Hands”.
