Barbara Jean Schultz

January 20, 1937 — July 9, 2023

Barbara Jean Schultz
(Nee Fraser) passed away on July 9, 2023 at the age of 86. Born in Honey Creek, WI on January 20, 1937 to Wesley and Ruth (Aspinall) Fraser. Beloved wife of Norman L. Schultz, they celebrated 62 years of marriage in June 2023. Loving mother of Norman W. (Katherine) Schultz, Lynnell (Peter) Lowney, Lea Alexander (Pollyanne Mather) and Laurie (David) Kliemann. Proud grandmother of Jessica (Jason) Silber, Melissa Grimm, Tiffany (Cory) Henningfield, Peter, Jr. and Philip Lowney, Noah and Adam Kliemann. Great grandmother to Kylie, Jonathan, Vincent, Nyah, and Elliot. Also survived by brother-in-law Earl Squire, nieces, nephews and many friends. She is preceded in death by her siblings Donald Fraser and wife Mary Ellen, George Fraser and wife Jane, and Beverly (Fraser) Squire, Father-in-Law Norman G. Schultz, Mother-in-Law Reka Schultz and Sister-in-Law Donna Grant.

Barb grew up on the family farm in Walworth County. She enjoys telling the story of dressing up the barn cats in doll clothes and pushing them around the farm in a baby buggy for hours as a child. She moved with her parents to Rochester in her early teens. A proud Aggie, she graduated from Racine County Agricultural High School in 1954. She attended the Union Grove Normal School and graduated with a teaching certificate. She taught for several years at Lake Denoon and Winkler schools. She worked with United Migrant Opportunity Services to start a daycare program for the children of migrant workers. After raising their four children she returned to work as a customer service representative at JCPenny Catalog.

Barb was a devoted member of Norway Lutheran Church and spent countless hours over many decades supporting that community. She was instrumental in the creation of the vacation bible school program that is still running today. She managed the annual Lutefisk dinner for many years, ordering food and supplies, scheduling food preparation, teaching Norwegian pastry classes and overseeing the more than 800 meals served on lutefisk day each year. She was active in alter guild, Sunday school, sang alto (and tenor in a pinch) with the choir and loved playing in the handbell choir. She volunteered with Helping Hands and continued making quilts for the church’s outreach program even after entering hospice care in January 2023. Barb also made dozens of pocket pal quilts for children in foster care.

Barb’s claims to fame include being named the 4H Grand Champion Canner of the Walworth County Fair in 8th grade and making a Norwegian wedding cake for the son of Regis Philbin. Known by her family for making epic birthday cakes and her legendary ability to get out stains. Above all, Barb was a helper, always looking for people in need and reaching out to lend a hand. She will be greatly missed.
